WHEN: April 11th-13th

  • April 11th (ALL projects due at school for setup)
  • April 12th (judging for all projects during school hours, Family Night Tour will be in the evening)
  • April 13th (school tour and project take-down)

WHO: All 4th and 5th grade students are required to do a project and a report. All other grade levels (K-3) and departments are encouraged to do classroom projects for presenting. Individual projects for K-3 are optional but also encouraged).

WHAT: Science EXPERIMENTS only! Too many times at previous fairs, students do a model or a demonstration (think, volcano or potato-lemon batteries). Judges will score non-experiments lower than true experiments. Remember: a true science experiment follows the scientific method! If you have questions about the difference between a model/demonstration and a science experiment, please speak to myself or one of the  amazing science fair committee members (Karen Fisk, Alicia Ortiz y Martinez, Andrea Hedrick, Amanda Dominguez, Megan Painter, Diamond Martinez and Elizabeth Heath-West)

Let's have a Pink Out Day!  You are invited to wear pink in support of all those who have lost the fight, won the fight, or who are currently fighting the breast cancer fight on Thursday, October 26th.   Attached are some pictures from previous years.  This is for all those we love who have been affected by breast cancer.   Please feel free to invite your students to show their support by wearing pink on this day as well.

October is also Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Month.  Show your support by wearing a blue/pink ribbon on your shirt.

Albuquerque Aloft

Many pilots who are registered for Balloon Fiesta sign up to participate in Albuquerque Aloft. Pilots tether or launch their balloons from selected school grounds in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho on the Friday morning before Balloon Fiesta.

You can use our pilot search to find schools and pilots, give it a try here!

Albuquerque Aloft has grown tremendously since the first event in 2005, and continues to bring the joy of ballooning directly to children in their school playgrounds. It is a great way to kick off the beginning of the nine days of Balloon Fiesta every October. Parents, students and teachers alike have the opportunity to meet the pilots and crew, and experience the excitement of watching and learning how a balloon flies. Albuquerque Aloft also provides city residents and guests a visual preview of Balloon Fiesta, as balloons launch from different sites around the city simultaneously.

Balloonists at selected schools may elect to fly from the campus or may remain inflated at the school site. Weather permitting; inflation is scheduled at approximately 6:45-7:00 a.m., with launch scheduled for 7:00 -7:30  a.m. The simultaneous launch is coordinated by KKOB AM Radio, the “official voice” of Balloon Fiesta.
Schools are encouraged to invite parents and students to be on hand for the event, and groups at some schools offer refreshments for sale, adding to the fun.

Albuquerque Aloft is the only Balloon Fiesta event in which balloons launch from pre-designated sites outside of Balloon Fiesta Park. The following is a list of the 2017 participating schools. The pilots that will scheduled to launched from each school will be added as the assignments are made.

Dear Chaparral Families,

Please be attentive to the safety of our students and staff. The front parking lot is our faculty and visitors parking lot. It is not intended to be an area to drop off and pick up students. Students are placed in a very dangerous situation when they have to cross the path of the buses after they are dropped off. Also, the added congestion leads to a lot of potential for accidents and conflict between staff and parents who are not adhering to this rule. Please do not drop off your student in the faculty/visitor parking lot.

Additionally, please do not block driveways in the neighborhood.  You could receive a citation from the Albuquerque Police Department.

Together we can!

Valerie Hoose, Principal

Dear Parents,

On Monday, August 21st, there will be a solar eclipse visible in Albuquerque between 10:21 AM and 1:13 PM.  While the solar eclipse presents a learning opportunity for students, looking directly at the sun can cause permanent damage to your eyes.  To ensure student safety, we will be following our inclement weather schedule on Monday, which means that all students will stay in the cafeteria for their entire lunchtime instead of going out to the playground.  Some teachers may have plans to safely view the eclipse with their students, and some may choose to allow students to view it online. Students who are traveling to and from the portables will be instructed to keep their eyes forward and to not to look up at the sun.

Please let the office know if your child will not be attending school on Monday due to cultural or religious reasons, and it will be an excused absence.

If you do not wish for your student to view the eclipse online or to participate in activities focused on the eclipse, please return the slip below to your child’s teacher no later than Monday morning, and we will provide an alternative activity.
